I knew the second I heard him. That’s the thing about the cork board.

Trailer 2 for Grand Theft Auto VI. A gruff voice at a boatyard in the Leonida Keys, telling Jason to go collect his cheques. My brain didn’t hesitate: that’s Stephen Root. I’d just finished Widow’s Bay, where he plays Wyck Crawford, so the voice was still fresh, but honestly it wouldn’t have mattered. I keep a record in my head, a little cork board, six degrees of voice actors. The pin went in before the sentence was over. Bill Dauterive. Milton Waddams. Brian Heder.

Root confirmed it himself in September, telling the Associated Press he’s in the game. The character name comes from the reporting; Rockstar still hasn’t published a cast list. But the trailer did the identifying long before anyone confirmed anything. Fans picked his voice out of Trailer 2 back in May 2025. Decades of Bill Dauterive will do that.

Here’s the confession: I knew Bill longer than any other Root character, and for the longest time I didn’t connect him to Root at all. I kinda thought it was all Mike Judge. Which is embarrassing, but it’s also the point. Root disappears into the unassuming. That’s the instrument.

Milton is the one that lives in my head rent-free. But the through-line across all of them is the dignity of the disregarded. Root embodies the downtrodden: men the world disrespects, easy to dismiss in a sense, but grounded and believable, and that’s owed to Root as a performer, on screen and in the booth. There’s always something mischievous underneath, something smarter than the first glance. In Widow’s Bay he’s the town kook who believes in the island’s curse, the unlucky herald, and then the curse turns out to be real and suddenly the kook was the only one paying attention. He won the Emmy for it last month, the oldest winner in the category’s history. The herald got his flowers.

Which brings us to Brian Heder. What we know: old-school drug runner, boatyard owner, Jason’s landlord, the guy handing out the early assignments. On paper, the fixer. The liaison for Jason and the other ne’er-do-wells.

And here’s what interests me: this is the ultimate little-guy actor walking into the most bombastic crime series alive. My prediction is that Brian gets up to some wild shit, far from the average joe, and Root convinces us every step of the way. Because that’s the trick working as intended: the unassuming man who turns out to be the most dangerous person in the room.

I’ll say it plainly: I think this is going to be a knockout performance. I’ll even predict a Game Award.
